Entries from January 2009
By mid day today, I will be finished with another one-credit class in my grad school program. I have a few assignments to finish for it later this week, but at least I don’t have to go to Saturday class after this.
After class I am meeting up with a friend to visit my local yarn store because she needs a relaxing project to work on. Hopefully we’ll find something for her to do.
This evening Steve and I will see an Oscar-nominated movie and tomorrow will be all about homework and football. We haven’t even planned a menu yet, likely because we’re still disappointed that the Eagles didn’t make it to the big game.

Two things converged this week to inspire me to whip up this project. First, Steve gave me The Friday Night Knitter’s Club book for Christmas and, while taking breaks from my grad school-heavy reading list, I motored through it in the last few weeks. While reading the book (a bit saccharine but good for entertainment) I was itching to work with yarn. So, last Saturday I got out my stash of nice boutique yarn that I purchased in the summer and tried to think of a small project to keep me busy (but not too busy!). And the last thing I wanted to make was another scarf. While thinking of a small-scale project, I realized that I needed a case to hold my sunglasses in my purse, since I have to buy new sunglasses all of the time because I don’t take care of them.
Viola! That’s how my idea for crocheting an eye glasses case came to be.
I am pretty happy with the final product (I especially like the ruffle edging) and think I may continue with crochet for the next few weeks, given that my sewing projects are much more time consuming and I have to be in my workroom for those projects. With crochet, I can sit in front of the good ol’ tube and catch up on my Martha’s or watch some ESPN. It’s a good way to multitask in my free time and keep me relaxed.

The big storm came through today. It wasn’t as much as a punch as everyone thought it would be. (What a surprise! In Philly we freak about all storms coming our way and they rarely live up to expectations.) But it did give me a good reason to work from home and catch up on some work that requires major concentration. There’s nothing like spending a snow day fighting with endnotes and Word style sheets.
Well, I can’t gripe too much. My class tonight did get cancelled so I’ll spend my evening curled up in front of the television finishing some projects. I think we all need a snow day once a year. January and February are too hard without at least one (maybe two . . . or three!?!).

Steve and I had great fun today, although I am excited to be at home now wearing some sweats and relaxing.
Our lunch at White Dog was spectacular: Steve got his burger (an eating out staple) and I enjoyed some delicious tomato basil soup and a goat cheese/endive/pecan salad.
I also purchased a new bobble at The Black Cat, White Dog’s adjacent gift store. I’ve been wanting a new piece of jewelry, and a brown/maroon/green glass pendant made by Eye and I Glass to be particuarly eye catching. To see what the pendant looks like, look at the website of the artist, Eric T. Nelson.

This weekend is so busy that I almost think it’s December with finals and holiday festivities!
I am starting my weekend in class (I’ll head out soon). Then, Steve and I are going into town to pick my best friend up from the train station. We’re then going to one of my all-time favorite restaurants, White Dog Cafe, and headed to an Oscar-nominated movie at the Ritz. After that, Steve and I are going to a chili, chocolate, and homebrew fest. It’s going to be a fun day!
Tomorrow I’ve got to hit the books and write a paper: how can it already be time to do that?

I was enjoying some free time earlier this month when I could post everyday. Now, I’m back to being swamped with homework, actual work, and housework.
I’m putting down the fabric shears for a bit to write a proposal for my fund raising class and to have some fun outside of the house this weekend.

Yes, I bought more fabric today. I am glad I did because it’s a pick-me-up after the Eagles’ loss.
Here are the fabrics I bought for a summertime quilt. It will take me awhile to work on, but I hope it’s a fun project.

Soon to be a beautiful quilt

I couldn’t wind down last night so after Steve went to bed I worked well into the wee morning hours to finish my latest project. I started Amy Butler’s Patchwork Handbag a month or so ago but didn’t finish it until recently for several reasons.
However, I am very excited to display my finished product here. I hope to use this bag in the springtime, once we’re not wearing heavy wool jackets. It’s fun to already have a spring accessory to gaze at to remember there are warmer times ahead!
Oh, and I am also excited about a purchase I made yesterday. I bought Joelle Hoverson’s Patchwork + Quilted Gifts, and I look forward to making a summertime quilt for Steve and me using one of her patterns, and I am very excited about some of the baby gift ideas, as I have been looking forward to finding that “go-to” baby gift for a few months.
Steve and I will continue our January lounge fest today, so I hope to start my kimono as well as work on my statsitics homework . . . go probability!!! But we’re really counting down to 3 p.m. EST today too. Can’t wait to watch the game!

Brrr, baby! It’s cold outside.
Steve and I just returned from errands, which ended up being a good reason to get out without having to be outside for too long.
We had fun spending a gift card at Barnes and Noble (I got some new craft books and other fun stuff including a pad of Amy Butler paper) and then headed to our favorite local food spots close to home. I snacked on my all-time favorite food (an Amish pretzel dipped in cinnamon and sugar) and we went a little crazy at our local Italian market. During the Eagles game tomorrow, Steve and I will be noshing on pasta, bruchetta, eggplant roll-ups, breadsticks, and ricotta canolli gelato. I can’t wait for tomorrow’s big game!

This week went by like molasses because many of us in the Philadelphia area are gearing up for Sunday’s NFC Championship game. Steve and I have planned our meal and can’t wait to watch ‘em birds!
I have a Saturday class tomorrow (aw shucks!) and it’s freezing cold out (double aw shucks!) but I know I’ll make it through.
Maybe tomorrow I’ll finish my quilted purse and start my kimono . . . we’ll see!
