Entries from November 2008

As I hinted earlier last week, I decided to make a little advent calendar for our house thanks to a friend’s inspiration.
I hung it up today, and here it is! Steve will be getting little presents on the odd days and I’ll be getting them on the evens. I hope this is a fun way to enjoy the whole season . . . and I hope it will cure our sugar fixes throughout the month!

Well, after a fabulous Thanksgiving weekend-some major eating, laughing with friends and family, and general fun-I am back to reality here. There is much to be done in the next month, so I need to get back down to business.
Activities for December include:
- Writing a statistics paper
- Taking a statistics final
- Presenting a strategic planning presentation
- Working
- Holiday parties
- Holiday shopping
- Putting up a real (!!!) Christmas tree
- Baking cookies
- Watching awesome Christmas movies
- And much, much more!
I can’t believe we’re almost counting down the last month of 2008. This year has gone fast!

Although I will not be lining up in front of stores today to commemorate the very American “black Friday,” I am still excited that the holiday season is upon us. Steve and I are headed up to NYC with friends to continue the holiday weekend.
We had some great Thanksgiving celebrations, and my stomach still aches from all of the overeating that occurred! And . . . thank goodness the Eagles won!
Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I am off from work this whole week for many reasons: to get ready for overnight company, to prepare Thanksgiving dinner, to work on several school projects, to hang out with the cats, and, more importantly, to get rested for the upcoming crazy holiday season!
I have always been a huge fan of the holidays. This year the holidays will be a bit different, since Steve and I won’t be traveling to my parents’ house to celebrate Christmas because of our work schedules. Therefore, the pressure’s on to expand our holiday season in Philly. This year I’ve worked on a project to help us ring in the season from day 1 of December. Thanks to a friendly encounter a few weeks ago, I got the idea to make an advent calendar. Though I did not knit cute little mittens for our advent calendar like my friend who inspired me, I did whip up twenty-four little stockings in the last week or so.
Here’s a pic of the project. I’ll post more after we hang the stocking calendar in the house.

Steve and I stayed up last night to watch the new Christmas special by Stephen Colbert. We thoroughly enjoyed it and have some new favorite Christmas songs for the rotation.
It’s hard to believe we’ll be knee deep in holiday happenings soon, but this special was a great way to kick off the season!

Last night I had the pleasure of watching a Boise State game on television, which is always a treat for me because the team is rarely televised nationally. It was so fun to see the team, and they have been so great this year. I mean, they’re undefeated after all!
However, it’s frustrating that, in all likelihood, they will not make a BCS bowl game because Utah is undefeated too (before I can whine too much, though, the Broncos need to win against Fresno next week). I really hope the BCS system undergoes a makeover in the next few years so the Broncos have the opportunity to be on the national stage at a greater level in the future. The team’s earned it!

Well, last night Steve picked me up in Princeton after a memorial service (which was beautiful, by the way). We drove down to Wegmans in Warrington to do our weekly shopping/Thanksgiving extravaganza shopping trip. Steve and I love Wegmans, not only because it is the best grocery store ever, but because we think back to the many times we went there as college undergraduates. We enjoyed dinner there and went pretty crazy with the shopping (Em, we can’t wait for you to come and stay with us!).
I love this time of year because it involves friends, family, relaxing, and traditions. Because I didn’t take all of my vacation earlier this year, I have the whole week of work off, which will give me time to catch up on schoolwork, get home projects done, and enjoy hanging out with some of my favorite people in the world. We’re even fitting in a trip to NYC next weekend!

Yay!!! Tomorrow’s Friday. I know that it’s not good to be living for the weekends, but right now I can’t help myself. The job and school is an intense schedule.
I am so excited that the holidays are upon us. Though I feel like it could still be mid-October, it is beginning to feel like winter, as we’ve had some cold temperatures and snow flurries today.
Steve and I are super psyched to go T-day shopping tomorrow. We’re making our grocery list and finalizing our menu tonight. Next week is going to be awesome with a couple family dinners, museum day with my best friend, and a weekend trip to New York!

What a week! This time of year is always so busy, whether you think it will be or not! Steve and I had a hectic week with work. I had an interesting Thursday, as I spent most of the day with a distinguished British philosopher. This was a bit nerve-wracking for me, but I was delighted when, at dinner, I spoke with him about Harry Potter, the Smithsonian museums, and our differing cultures. He was funny and insightful, and it is an experience I won’t soon forget.
This weekend I am hoping to study up on my Thanksgiving dinner (which is now less than two-weeks away), work on some school stuff, and mentally prepare myself for Tuesday, when it may snow(!!!). I don’t think I enjoyed autumn enough, so to have winter approaching is a bit frightening.
One final thing . . . Napoleon says hi!

In between writing a long midterm, I have been very busy with domestic duties at the house. Steve and I are catching up after a hectic few months and doing everything from buying people birthday presents to cleaning out our closets. The exciting news in our life is that we bought new flannel sheets, a bath mat (I mean, come on, does it really get any more exciting than that?!?!), and a jacket, shoes, and sweaters for Steve.
The other major purchase this weekend was a piece of plywood that we can use as the leaf in our dining-room table. We had to get this because we are hosting Thanksgiving this year, which I am super excited about. We also bought a crate-paper turkey for our table’s centerpiece, and I was savvy enough to buy some paper products for the appetizer and dessert portions of the meal. (Since we don’t have a dishwasher, I thought this could save us some time). We’re in countdown mode to Thanksgiving, and in two-and-a-half weeks will be enjoying the kick-off to the holidays with friends and family.
