Off to Chicago!

October 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

That’s right, just when I thought things were calming down! Now I am off to Chicago.

I am missing the ticker-tape parade here in Philly. It was so awesome to see the Phillies claim their championship yesterday! They really deserve it and it has been so fun to watch this team for the last four years.

I hope to post a few updates in Chicago. I’ll be there until Monday night.

Ciao for now!

The Week Round Up

October 25, 2008 · Leave a Comment

As I mentioned, there is a lot going on in my life right now. After returning from Frankfurt, I am trying to catch up on all work- and school-related tasks. That means my nose is in the statistics books this weekend!

My birthday occurred earlier this week and I want to thank everyone who made it so special. Of course Steve got me some truly amazing gifts, including Amy Butler’s In Stitches book and a twelve-piece Martha Stewart pot set (which we’ll use when we host Thanksgiving!). I also got lots of really cool things from so many friends and family members. Thanks for thinking of me!

I’ve posted some pics of the b-day highlights, including the beautiful wrapping paper that my mom and aunt’s gifts arrived in. I always appreciate a pretty wrapping job.

We’ve got our fingers crossed that the Phillies game happens tonight. It’s raining now, so hopefully it will pass through soon!

I’m Home!

October 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

That’s right, in case you couldn’t tell from my early morning post today, I am back home in Philly and very happy to be back.

I had a great trip but am so happy to be reunited with the cats and hubby.

I really enjoyed my time away from the usual routine but look forward to resuming it with gusto. I’ve got a lot of homework to attend to, but I am also hoping to have some fun in the next few weeks too.

I’ve uploaded a few pics I took in Frankfurt, including the delicious desserts from the very gourmet restaurant I went to earlier in the week, a picture of an atrium at the Messe, where the book fair occurs every year, a cool poster, and a pic of the Roemer Platz at night.

Frankfurt, Day 5

October 18, 2008 · 1 Comment

I am getting ready to pack up the hotel room after my full week at Frankfurt. My flight leaves at 11 a.m. tomorrow and I’ll be back with the hubby and cats at the house by 3 p.m. or so. I am so looking forward to seeing them: it’s hard to be away for a full week.

The fair dragged a bit today and I was looking forward to doing some shopping but got shut out. But I ate a delicious Thai meal a few hours ago, which tasted spicy and exotic, which was a great change from my bread and cheese diet of late.

It’s been a pleasure to be outside the country for a bit, especially with the tense news swirling about. I’ve had the opportunity to read The Guardian everyday this week, and it is always fun to read Brit news. I am always in Frankfurt with a Madonna controversy too! A few years ago it was her adoption controversy and this year it is her divorce. It’s not too big of a deal, but it is certainly widely reported in the British news.

Yay for home-cooked meals and frisky cats in my near future!

A Big October Weekend for Weddings

October 18, 2008 · 3 Comments

Just wanted to wish all a good time to all of my family members involved in weddings today. My brother and his girlfriend are in Michigan for her sister’s wedding and Steve is going to a wedding in New Jersey. I hope everyone has a great time.

Congratulations!

Frankfurt, Day 4

October 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I am very happy tonight because I’ve completed all of my official appointments for FBF 08. It was a very successful fair from a work perspective, and I hope that tomorrow will be very active too. I look forward to reviewing other publisher’s works and scouting out some holiday gifts!

I went to my favorite Italian restaurant tonight and ate a delicious menu. We’ve been drinking lots of Heidegger beer too. I had a delicious caprese-like salad, only the cheese tasted more like brie. Then I had my favorite pasta dish ever–fresh linguine tossed in a giant wheel of parmigiana-like cheese and then with shaved truffles on top. It is absolutely AMAZING!!!

It’s exciting to think that in 48 hours I will be home lounging with my husband and cats. While it is great to travel, I can’t help but miss home and all of its comforts immensely.

Frankfurt, Day 3

Another day at the book fair, which whizzed by.

Finished the evening at my favorite Irish pub and slugged back some Kilkenny’s. Very tasty!

More tomorrow!

Cheers!

Frankfurt, Day 2

October 15, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Just returning after a fabulous dinner celebrating the end of the first official day of the fair! We dined at a modern French restaurant in Sauchsenhausen and had the most amazing meal that included bread with curry cheese; horseradish mousse; a pumpkin soup with raspberry sorbet; a rice, lemon, and blue cheese main course; and a dessert trio that included passion fruit sorbet, creme brulee, and a chocolate cake (I’ll post a pic of the chocolate cake when I get back home).

Frankfurt, Day 1

October 14, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I arrived in Frankfurt today. Upon arriving, I ate a great European breakfast, took a cat nap, strolled through the university area, set up my stand at the book fair, and enjoyed casual and work conversation with colleagues at a local beer hall. Now I’m exhausted and look forward to getting a good night’s sleep.

There are many appointments ahead for tomorrow and the night will end with a good reception and a tasty dinner at a Mediterranean restaurant.

One bummer, I forgot the cord to connect my camera to my computer. The first causality of my packing!

Getting Ready to Take Off

October 13, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Alright, I am leaving for Germany in a few hours (and am about ready to start packing).

Some things that I will be bringing for entertainment (most of it is thanks to Steve):

  • The first season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
  • The latest Real Simple and Martha Stewart Living magazines
  • Two books: Literacy and Longing in L.A. and Dewey (it’s the book about the cat who lived in an Iowa library)
  • My laptop (Dad, this is an HP that’s lasted for six years and is the best computer I’ve ever had!)
  • Nerds (I realize this is candy, but its my favorite candy and will lead to great enjoyment)
  • My camera (I promise I will take pictures the third time around)
  • Noise-canceling headphones
  • And, last but not least, my statistics midterm review sheet

I will probably come up with a few more items, but that’s all I remember right now.

Please come back sometime this week to see what I’ve discovered at the book fair!
